A flea infestation in your home is a nuisance to you and horrible for your pets. Fleas bite and cause itchiness for both humans and fur-babies, but they can also carry diseases. Some pets are also allergic to flea saliva, which could cost you a trip to the vet. Flea infestations are difficult to eradicate once there is a problem, so it is important to prevent fleas from becoming unwelcome houseguests in the first place. Here are ways to prevent fleas in your home.

Vacuum and Sweep Often

Fleas can enter your home on pets, but sometimes you can track fleas into your home by picking them up on a walk outside. You may catch fleas in the grooves of your shoes and then they drop into your carpets. Be sure to vacuum and sweep often, and make sure to vacuum couch cushions and furniture as well as the floors.

Clean Human and Pet Bedding

Clean your bedding and your pets’ bedding often. Any materials that could have fleas in them should be washed at least every 3 weeks. Make sure to use the hot water cycle to help kill any fleas.

Use Flea Prevention Cleaning Products

Carpet sprays are a common tool to add to your anti-flea toolbox. It can help to get rid of any fleas the vacuum may have missed.

Take care of your pets

Bathe your pets regularly and use a flea comb to prevent fleas from making a home in their fur. Talk to your vet about other options for flea prevention, like medications and collars.

Maintain your yard

As with most pests, keeping your yard well-trimmed and maintained is a great way to prevent fleas. Fleas hide in tall grasses and shrubs. Other critters, like raccoons, mice, or squirrels, may also be attracted to an overgrown lawn. These larger pests can bring fleas into your yard as hitchhikers.
