It’s that time of year again! Time to give your home a deep clean and declutter. Spring cleaning is also a great opportunity to implement pest prevention in your home. Add these cleaning items to your checklist to help prevent a pest problem.
Bathrooms
- Check for any leaking pipes and make sure the fan is working correctly. Pests love moisture!
- Pour bleach down drains to get rid of any lurking pests.
- Disinfect the shower, tub, and toilet.
- Declutter under your sink! Take everything out, throw away what you don’t need, and wipe out the cabinet.
Bedrooms
- Inspect your bed for bed bugs. Make sure to check the seams, and look at the bedding, mattress, and box spring!
- Declutter under the bed. Sweep or vacuum underneath as well to remove any debris that may be there.
Closets
- Take everything out and inspect it for moth damage or for signs of beetles or bedbugs. Make sure everything that needs to be stored in an airtight container is still protected!
- Donate or toss anything that you no longer need or want. Pests love clutter—it’s a great hiding place.
- Sweep, dust, and disinfect the closet before you return everything to its rightful place.
Attics and basements
- Give your space a thorough inspection for signs of pests. Attics and basements get less traffic than your closets, so there are fewer times that you might notice a pest problem throughout the year. Look behind stacks of storage containers.
- Get rid of anything that you no longer want.
- Sweep and dust the entire space.
Kitchen and pantry
- Empty all cabinets, your fridge, and the freezer. Wipe down and disinfect every surface, and make sure to sweep your pantry shelves, too. Get rid of any crumbs and food residue.
- Before putting everything back in its rightful place, check for expired food or things you no longer need. Donate unexpired items to your local food pantry when possible.
- As soon as you have collected all the old food and debris, seal the trash bag and take it outside immediately.
Garage
- Often uninsulated, not temperature controlled, and connected to the outside world, garages are hotspots for pests. Conduct a thorough inspection of the space for signs of pests – large and small.
- Organize the space, and consider building or buying shelves so that nothing is resting on the floor.
- Sweep and dust what you can.
- Check for leaking pipes and any gaps in doors. Make sure the garage door is working properly.
