Silverfish are one of the creepiest critters you may encounter in your home. While they won’t harm you, they can contaminate your food, ruin some of your belongings, and they can leave stains behind. To keep these unwelcome guests out of your home, here are some steps to take.
1. Minimize Moisture
Like many pests, silverfish are drawn to moisture. In damp spaces like the basement or attic, consider using a dehumidifier. In bathrooms or the kitchen, make sure to use fans to keep the space dry after a shower or after cooking. Beyond making these adjustments, it’s also important to monitor the causes of excess moisture in your home. Conduct regular inspections of your plumbing and foundation, and make sure gutters are directed away from your home.
2. Seal Up Food
Silverfish are also attracted to food sources. If they find their way into your pantry, they can contaminate your food. Be sure to discard food with any signs of insect activity! Store dry goods like rice, pasta, oats, and pet food in airtight containers, and seal off any opened packages.
3. Try Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth, a fine white powder that can destroy the outer coating of some pests, including silverfish, is another way to prevent these insects from inhabiting your home. Once silverfish come into contact with the diatomaceous earth, they will lose their moisture and die. Sprinkle some of this powder in areas where you’ve spotted silverfish. Diatomaceous earth comes in “Food Grade” and “Filter Grade” – Be sure to use Food Grade to ensure it’s safe for you and your family pets.
