Spicebush Swallowtail:
The Spicebush Swallowtail can be spotted along any hiking trail in NC. They prefer Hardwood forests over Softwood but make their flight to southern areas in March. You may even see them munching on some sassafras, their favorite food.
Little Yellow:
If you’ve spent one spring or summer day on the beaches or fields of coastal NC, you’ve seen a Little Yellow flutter by. Whether they are hopping from flower to flower drinking nectar or skirting about the sand dunes, these butterflies are quintessential to the sweet, hot and humid days of NC.
Monarch:
The Monarch butterfly is easily the most recognizable one and for good reason! With their beautiful wings and mass reproduction, NC is graced by these flying beauties. They are found in all regions of NC, but they prefer milkweeds and wooded areas.
Great Spangled Fritillary:
The Great Spangled Fritillary is a meadow butterfly that prefers the open air and tall grass. The fritillary is primarily in the Piedmont and mountain regions along the stream banks and clear-cuts. They can be seen feeding on Joe-pye-weed and ninebark.
