The saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. Here in North Carolina, April’s rainy season may attract things less desirable than pretty flowers. With the rain, we welcome the idea of healthier vegetable and flower gardens, but we can also expect some unwelcome consequences to our home.
You may notice an increase in pests and possible water damage. Let's take a look at what signs you can keep your eye open for this rainy season.
Standing Water
Too much rain can cause large areas of standing water. Damage can expand from small leaks in doors, ceiling, or the roof to larger ones. Too much rain can overload gutters, causing possible damage to your home's exterior and foundation. Longer periods of rain can result in flooding. Flooding raises a high risk of structural damage, though it is the extreme case.
Standing water after long rain periods is more common. Standing water can attract pests, and depending on the location around your home, encourage pesky bugs to seek refuge inside your home.
Here are common insects to watch out for below:
Mosquitoes
The increase of moisture in the air creates a comfortable environment for mosquitoes. Standing water is a prime spot for mosquitoes to breed. An adult female mosquito can lay up to 400 eggs at one time. That's a lot of mosquitoes surrounding your home!
Our Mosquito Squad Services offers a 21-day barrier spray, and alternative 14-day all natural treatment option as well to keep your home and yard safe from mosquito overload.
Termites
Swarming season is upon us and after a good rain, it is not unusual to see "swarmers" – flying termites. The rainfall is a much-needed water source for the termites. Swarmers normally emerge from the ground to seek out mates to start new termite colonies. Swarming termites are an unwelcome guest for any home owner and, in the event that you see flying termite swarmers around or in your home, it is most likely an original, local colony.
Termite swarmers are "winged" termites and their primary function during their life is reproduction and creating new colonies. Emerging from mud tubes built by the termite workers, swarmers vary in color from yellow to black. Swarmers are attracted to light, as such, they are often found around exterior lights or window sills. Most swarmers cannot fly much more than 300 feet.

Other Soil Dwelling Insects
Many insects live in the soil outside. When it rains, water gets into their homes, driving them away from the habitat. When this happens, several types of insects may seek shelter in your home. You may notice an increase of beetles, roaches, ants and other soil-dwelling insects. Keep up with regular pest control visits may help keep this problem under control.
