Picture this: the sun is shining, the waves are crashing, there’s barely a breeze… and bugs won’t leave you alone. When you’re relaxing at the beach, the last thing you want is a pesky bug to bother you! Although it’s not remembered as often as sun protection, bug protection can be important at the beach, too. Here are a few tips to enjoy a bug-free beach day.
Try a Sunscreen and Bug Spray Combo
Why not kill two birds with one stone? Make life easier for you and your whole family by applying just one product every few hours. Bull Frog is a popular choice!
Choose Your Beach Wisely
Not all beaches and waterfronts are buggy. When picking your spot, keep an eye out for stagnant water, lots of vegetation, marshes, or accumulated garbage. Each of those are attractive to a variety of pests and insects, so it’s best to stay away from them if possible.
Don’t Leave Food Out
If you’re enjoying a sandwich at lunchtime or a small snack, make sure to store food when you’re not eating. It’s also important to clean up trash or food that may have fallen on the ground. Bring a trash bag with you so you have a designated location for empty soda cans, paper plates, and wrappers to keep your area as clean as you can.
Cover Up
While you’re not swimming, consider a cover up. A physical barrier between you and nature is an easy way to keep bugs away. Loose, linen shirts and pants are lighter options so you can stay cool in while protecting yourself from insects.
Reset Before Going Home
Before getting into the car to head home, do a quick check of your belongings to make sure no insects crawled their way into your beach bag or cooler. Rinse off, too. This will remove salt, sand, and help ensure no small insects hitch a ride home on you or your beach shoes.
If you follow these tips, your beach day should be a bug-free success! Remember to reapply your spray every 2 hours, or according to instructions on the label. Have fun in the sun this summer!
